Dream Songs for the Endless Weekend was written and recorded at creative community center and artist residency the Sanctuary. Many of the tunes first came about as accompaniment for devised theater and puppet performances that were staged in the Sanctuary's hall, where the album was eventually recorded. The melodies and lyrics on the album are inspired by the unusual and inviting world of puppet theater, where disbelief is suspended, objects are animated with improbable life, and the imagination is invited to wander.

Led by Daniel Nickerson & Tayloranne Finch, a group of friends came together to record the songs, sharing in the relaxed feeling of the singalongs. Interspersed are occasional nocturnal piano instrumentals with musical saw singing above. The sound of the Cowtown Serenaders is informed by the feeling of classic jazz and country songcraft, as well as the far out folk music of singers like Michael Hurley, Vashti Bunyan, and Arthur Russell. The tunes are strung together with a web of collaged drones, chiming bells, and laughter, adding to the surreal and fable-like journey through the album.
